Details

Foundation is a portfolio suite of prints by Tyrrell Winston, and the artist’s first collaboration with Louis Buhl & Co. Foundation includes four archival pigment prints on 100% cotton rag museum-grade paper, presented in a slate wood box. Each portfolio box is unique and includes a functional lift made from a found basketball net, a material used by the artist in his large-scale installations. Please note each net will vary in size, shape, and color. All portfolios will include prints with matching numbers and a numbered colophon page on archival vellum.

These four backboards were recovered from Marcy Playground in Bedstuy Brooklyn in 2018. The basketball courts at Marcy Playground were renovated and these backboards were replaced with much lighter fiberglass backboards. Having worked in the neighborhood for the better part of ten years, Tyrrell Winston saved the backboards from impending scrap yard doom as they were about to be taken away and lost forever.

This is the first time that the backboards are being shared with the public since they were recovered. In most major cities around the United States basketball rims have been removed or obstructed to encourage social distancing because of COVID-19. Unfortunately, there is no set timetable for when rims will be remounted/unobstructed.

100% of proceeds from this edition will be donated to the Friends of Marcy Houses Inc., an organization that provides services to children ages 10-14 that reside in New York City Public Housing. It is important to the artist that the price of the edition be kept accessible while still providing significant aid to the organization.

“Salvaging the Marcy Playground backboards from impending scrap was serendipitous. Now, these backboards get to live forever. And the resources provided by the sale of the portfolios will provide needed funding for an organization (Friends of the Marcy Houses) that is doing work in the community on a very personal and grassroots level.”
