Details

Louis Buhl & Co. is pleased to present a series of monoprints with artist Jason REVOK. Examining the question of authorship from start to finish, REVOK has developed systematic yet imperfect tools to carry out his vision and has created a number of unmistakable bodies of work. Introducing a meditatively raw design, the prints are a continuation of REVOK’s distinguished Spirograph series. Each print is distinctly unique from the next, complete with respective colors and imagery constructed in person by the artist throughout the printing process.

In order to create his Spirograph compositions, REVOK has crafted a large-scale, machine-like spirograph template out of plywood. The stator (outside ring) is fastened to the wall, while the rotor (a smaller gear that holds the can of paint) engages within the perimeter as it moves. The work attempts to harness imperfections and chaos within this predetermined framework, and the number of compositions made possible by combining gears of different sizes and shapes is endless. Here, REVOK has made a brilliant modification to a classic drawing tool, though it is evident through video footage of his process that it is not a methodology for the weak—substantial muscle is required to sustain the physicality needed to complete the work.
