Louis Buhl & Co. is excited to announce a new collaboration with the Detroit Institute of Arts to release a screenprint edition from the Estate of Charles McGee, inspired by Spectral Rhythms, a pivotal work from the 1970s, part of the collection at the DIA. This edition was created on the anniversary of Time is Now, a retrospective exhibition of McGee's legacy, curated by Jova Lynne and presented at the Shepherd from May 2024 - July 2024.
In Spectral Rhythms, McGee explored the color spectrum and how colors parallel musical notes that vary in sound depending on their context. McGee was an artist, teacher, and gallery owner who explored a variety of materials, styles, techniques, and formats throughout his prolific career.
McGee’s family moved to Detroit in 1934 as part of the Great Migration. He participated in art programs after school and then studied at what is now the nearby College for Creative Studies. He spent a year studying art in Spain before returning to Detroit.
