Louis Buhl & Co. is pleased to present “Color Tests,” a unique series of five small-scale paintings by Los Angeles-based artist Robert Moreland. Known for his faceted wall works, maquettes, and freestanding objects, Moreland’s constructions represent an arresting intersection between painting and sculpture.
This intimate series functions both as a set of studies and as standalone works. Using hand-stretched canvas, leather hinges, and angular wooden supports—materials foundational to his practice—Moreland continues his exploration of form, color, and materiality. These small-scale maquettes serve as a testing ground for compositional and chromatic ideas in real space with actual materials, offering a fuller understanding of the dynamic interactions between surface, structure, and light.
"Seeing the colors’ relationship to one another in an actual, faceted piece gives me a much better idea of what may work in future projects," says Moreland. "Light and shadow can create tones I couldn’t have predicted by simply working flat… These color tests are simply a furtherance of my maquette-making process. Just a bit more fleshed out by using the actual materials that I typically work with rather than paper or architectural board."
