Louis Buhl & Co. is thrilled to present a unique series of spirograph paintings on metal by artist Jason REVOK, releasing on the occasion of his exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit. In order to create his spirograph compositions, REVOK has crafted a large-scale, machine-like spirograph template out of plywood. This series was created on 60" aluminum exclusively for Louis Buhl & Co. Each piece unique, the series is united through an evident visual thread defined by vibrant color palettes and like marks.

REVOK sourced the aluminum panels from LA’s leading street signage production company, adopting a mundane material and transforming it into something extraordinary. The juxtaposition of mechanical and gestural processes yield a result that is both conceptual and painterly all while staying true to REVOK’s signature aesthetic.

To produce the soft colors that drip and dissolve into the surface, REVOK writes the names of his friends and family that have passed, a means of remembering and honoring those who have enriched his life, then erases those names, leaving behind “ghosts.” This practice is a way of celebrating how we are part of a larger whole and those that touch us carry on within us and make us who we are. It also references the art of graffiti and graffiti removal, as REVOK uses a process he has reappropriated from the city workers around the country that erase his own tags.
