Hedy Yang, Cloud Mug, 2022
4 Questions with Louis Buhl & Co. collector Randy Enochs
Tell us about the first work of art you ever acquired from Louis Buhl & Co.
My first acquisition from Louis Buhl was one of Hedy Yang’s hand-painted cloud mugs. I’ve always loved coffee, art, and sunsets — this piece felt like all three distilled into one. There’s something poetic about beginning each morning with an object that blurs the line between the functional and the transcendent. It was an easy “yes,” and definitely started the avalanche of my collecting.

What Louis Buhl & Co. project would be the dream addition to your collection?
Another impossible question! I’ve been fortunate to collect works from many of my favorite Louis Buhl artists, and recently I was thrilled to add a Tyrell Winston piece to the collection. Still, I find myself continuously drawn to the works of Bev Fishman and Sam Friedman — there’s a vibrancy, an immediacy to their colors that feels almost electric. I’m endlessly fascinated by that tension between control and chaos in their compositions.

Is there a piece in your collection that feels especially personal or meaningful to you?
Several pieces hold deep personal resonance for me. The framed Michigan–Alabama score is especially significant — I went to the University of Michigan, and that moment represents far more than a game. It’s memory, pride, and identity all at once. It hangs in my office along with my other treasured Michigan memorabilia.
