Threads
Paul Kremer
January 24, 2026 – March 18, 2026
Louis Buhl & Co. is pleased to present Threads, an exhibition of new large-scale tapestry works by Paul Kremer, opening January 24, 2026, which continues the artist’s long-standing exploration of color, perception, and material translation. Rooted in historical traditions of collaboration between artists and master fabricators, the exhibition foregrounds the shared knowledge and technical fluency that have shaped textile practices for centuries.
From Le Corbusier’s work with the weavers of Aubusson in the 1930s—facilitated by figures such as Marie Cuttoli—to later projects connecting painters including Kenneth Noland with Navajo weavers through Gloria F. Ross, tapestry has long served as a site where images are not merely reproduced but reinterpreted through the deep material intelligence of those who know the medium. Developed in close collaboration with Magnolia Editions, Kremer’s new works translate digital compositions from his Peel series into complex woven forms realized on customized Jacquard looms. Rather than relying on surface pigment, color is constructed optically through carefully calibrated combinations of warp and weft threads. This approach produces a dynamic visual experience that shifts with proximity: up close, viewers encounter dense fields of interlaced fibers; from a distance, these structures resolve into smooth gradients and sharply articulated forms.
Kremer also worked with Aurélien Ruotte and Vangart in Lyon to translate his digital compositions into embroidered works using advanced digital embroidery systems. Here, programmed fields of stitch replace woven structure, offering a distinct yet complementary material language through which color and form are articulated. Together, the tapestries and embroideries expand Kremer’s exploration of how images behave when filtered through different systems of structure, light, and material constraint.
A selection of works on paper from Kremer’s Peel series will accompany the textiles on view, functioning both as generative source material and as independent works that reveal the artist’s compositional thinking in a more immediate register. Through subtle variations in color interplay, the intimate paintings underscore the conceptual continuity between Kremer’s digital processes and their translation into physical form, illuminating the ongoing loop between image, material, and perception that underpins the exhibition as a whole.
