Michael Dotson

Using a bright and unnatural color palette, Michael Dotson creates paintings that are reminiscent of computer-simulated environments. Inspired by technology's growing power to bring any fantasy to life, Dotson has mastered a painting technique that is clean, crisp, and mechanical — the precision of his linework used as a tool to accentuate the artificiality of simulated 3-D spaces. Dotson is known for depictions of nostalgic icons like characters from Disney films that he translates into the language of digital media. His paintings portray familiar fairytale personas in what appear to be virtual spaces that he renders with vaporwave palettes. In a world that is increasingly reliant on technology, Dotson’s work tells an interesting story about the connection between the digital and the analog.
