Louis Buhl & Co. is thrilled to participate in the 2025 edition of Future Fair (Booth R14) in New York from May 7-10, 2025. The presentation will features artists Hannah Rose Dumes, Olivia Guterson, and Sara Nickleson; in thought and process, these artists share an exploration of feminine consciousness through a surrender to being and instinct, and an essential connection to nature. As female artists in a time overwhelmingly dictated by technology, productivity, and ephemerality, it has become a necessary act of resistance and healing to embrace a practice centered on reflection. The consciousness of all people expresses itself in two complimentary yet opposite ways which have been deemed ‘masculine’ and ‘feminine,’ and Western culture is centered upon the rational, progress-and-action-based masculine. For a more complete consciousness, the feminine condition must also be acknowledged and developed. This is especially true for women and people who identify with the feminine, as they suffer lifelong pressure to thrive within an unbalanced, predominantly masculine culture. Feminine consciousness is subtle and energetic, often experienced through the senses, emotions, and connection to innate knowledge.
Dumes’s abstract canvases unfold organically, living many lives in the studio before reaching their final form. Each mark represents a nuanced reaction that informs subsequent decisions, gradually allowing the visual elements to assume their own agency. In a similarly intuitive way, Guterson’s multidisciplinary practice relies heavily on iteration, repetition, and listening-based call-and-response. She sees her practice as a collaboration with her lineage through listening, divination, and working with and through unconscious ancestral archives. Nickleson finds solace in world-building that draws from her studies in consciousness and melancholia. Each work begins with a multitude of disparate elements assembled through digital collage, a process she sees as reflective of a human condition that is awkward, expansive, and fragmented. In this process, she works to establish the idea that one’s spirit is paramount to physicality.
