Figuration
Louis Buhl & Co. is pleased to highlight a selection of limited edition prints showcasing a diverse range of approaches towards figuration. Learn how four artists—Cristina BanBan, Paul Verdell, Natalie Wadlington and Tiffany Alfonseca—utilize the processes of printing to expand their explorations of the self in relation to natural and urban spaces, to others, and to one’s own being. A roster of feelings from longing to curiosity are elicited through stylistic marks, foundational concepts and figurative expressions, revealing the ingenuous perspectives of the works’ creators.
Cristina BanBan — Le Marais
Le Marais is a series of limited edition lithographs by Spanish-born-Brooklyn-based artist Cristina BanBan. BanBan is recognized for her maximalist compositions featuring voluptuous and exaggerated female figures in a bold palette of fleshy hues emphasized through wide brushstrokes. In order to create Le Marais, BanBan visited Paris, where she worked closely with Deb Chaney Editions and printed at Ateliers Guilbaud.
Despite having lived in Spain and London, this trip was BanBan’s first time to Paris. Through the guidance that Deb and her team provided, BanBan became familiar with the art of lithography, a process into which her work seamlessly translates. When she wasn’t working at the studio, BanBan spent much time exploring the city—its freshness, beauty, and rich history serving as direct inspiration for what would become Le Marais. Le Marais is a district in Paris best known as one of the city’s main localities for art galleries; September of 2021 is when BanBan created the three lithographs.

Paul Verdell― In a Field
In a Field is the first-ever print Paul Verdell has produced. Working primarily in oil paint and pastel, Verdell’s use of varying exposures of canvas and paper between his strokes and fields of color add a feeling of ephemerality and fleeting exchange, allowing the viewer space to explore and question relationships between audience, artist, and subject. Foundational to Verdell’s practice are his drawings on paper, thus the process of creating a lithograph proved a seamless transition for the artist’s work. In a Field is an interpretive self portrait; an escapism piece of sorts, where Verdell is set napping in a field and tuning out the world around him. An influence of Detroit at play, Verdell cites the various open fields and abandoned homes with overgrown and wild lawns he has observed to be on his mind throughout the scene’s development. A particular fascination with the composition’s background, the piece is a subtle introduction to Verdell’s latest body of work, which densely focuses on abstract interpretations of landscapes.

Natalie Wadlington’s practice centers around creating richly-colored paintings that are based in story-telling and figuration. Her characters are wide-eyed with wonderment and fear as they navigate various environments and encounters with both wild and domesticated animals. Wadlington views the interactions presented within her works as metaphors that communicate larger archetypal narratives of love, conflict, and misjudgment, specifically in our relationship to animals.
Garden with White Birch depicts a subject and an animal situated in a garden, the human bending and adjusting to the dog’s company. Through their nuanced interplay, Wadlington depicts our longing for connection. Through their nuanced interplay, Wadlington depicts our longing for connection. In order to create the lithograph, the artist visited New York where she worked closely with Deb Chaney Editions. Through the guidance that Deb provided, Wadlington became familiar with the art of lithography, a process that she became quickly fond of. Says Wadlington: “Drawing on a lithography stone is very rewarding because the mark-making is so smooth and buttery. The oil sticks glide across the surface of the stone so delicately, it is a wonderful way to draw. I explore a smaller, lighter touch in my drawing practice, and the lithograph stone lends itself well to this. It allows me to enter a thoughtful, dreamy space that perhaps the figure in this print embodies.”

Tiffany Alfonseca is a Bronx-based Dominican-American artist who creates vibrant artworks that celebrate Black and Afro-Latinx diasporic culture. Alfonseca taps into her Afro-Dominican roots and leverages it as a conceptual cantilever that provides a dynamic framework for her artistic practice. Her work aims to visually articulate that the Black and Afro-Latinx diaspora does not exist within a monolith, but that these communities are a cultural cornucopia that is vast, varied, and complex.
When you consider a history where Black and Brown bodies are constantly on guard, Alfonseca’s work serves as a safe space teeming with beauty and joy. Amantes, meaning “Lovers” in English, depicts two companions sharing an intimate and soft embrace. Amantes, meaning “Lovers” in English, depicts two companions sharing an intimate and soft embrace. Says Alfonseca: “Growing up, I never really saw romantic, loving, healthy relationships in my environment or in the Black and Brown community. I mostly grew up seeing or knowing a lot of single mothers or dysfunctional relationships and marriages. As an adult, I know a healthy and loving relationship is something I have always wanted to attain. The older I get, the more I admire love, and Amantes is a moment I feel can describe that.” In addition to the regular edition of 30 prints, Aflonseca has created a special color variant edition limited to ten prints.
