Colorful Abstract Editions

Figuration

Louis Buhl & Co. is pleased to highlight a selection of limited edition prints showcasing a diverse range of approaches towards figuration. Learn how four artists—Cristina BanBan, Paul Verdell, Natalie Wadlington and Tiffany Alfonseca—utilize the processes of printing to expand their explorations of the self in relation to natural and urban spaces, to others, and to one’s own being. A roster of feelings from longing to curiosity are elicited through stylistic marks, foundational concepts and figurative expressions, revealing the ingenuous perspectives of the works’ creators.

Beverly Fishman — Untitled (Depression)

Within Fishman’s work, color and surface are calibrated for maximum effect, transforming the iconography of the pharmaceutical industry into hard-edged relief painting. Fishman’s evolving exploration of vibrant pill-shaped reliefs are created to attract immediate attention, mimicking the vigorous and persuasive tactics used by drug companies and their advertising agents.

Exhibited in Untitled (Depression),—the artist's first tondo edition, printed on rising museum board—Fishman’s evolving exploration of vibrant pill-shaped reliefs are created to attract immediate attention, mimicking the vigorous and persuasive tactics used by drug companies and their advertising agents: “[The shapes within the print] are appropriated from actual pills that I have found images of online, and the cuts in their surfaces correspond to the score marks that allow these drugs to be divided into smaller doses. [The form] connects them to the social problems of today.”

Greg Bogin― I Will Love You Forever

The work of Greg Bogin is bright, minimal, and filled with motion. Within his practice, the artist sets out on a path of making work that brings happiness and wonder to the world, and creates a momentary respite for both himself and the viewer. The uniquely-shaped edition was printed on rising museum board and is complete with a gradient-lined custom die-cut void at its center, evoking feelings of joy and happiness with a touch of irony.

An especially meaningful project to Bogin, he says of the edition titled I Will Love You Forever: “These prints are dedicated to my wife Kyrie, her radiant light guides me always. I hope they provide some positive energy, a moment of joy, a reprieve from the everyday, a turn of kindness.”

Brooklyn-based artist Eric Shaw creates bold abstract paintings that contain geometric forms inspired by graphic design signage found around New York City. His creative process begins digitally: the artist initially makes drawings on a smartphone application that are later translated into large-scale acrylic paintings on canvas. His work is both highly improvisational and painstakingly precise.

Shaw often recycles shapes and repurposes ideas to aid with the evolution of his visual vocabulary. Envelope Near Me, for example, is based on one of Shaw’s large-scale paintings, and excels his process driven practice through a continued interplay with the analog and the digital as he worked to navigate the physical limitations of screens and color. Its complex composition incorporates a marriage of diverging and centripetal gradient forms to elicit a palpable sense of movement and energy.
