Louis Buhl & Co. is pleased to present a series of Spirograph Monoprints with artist Jason REVOK. Examining the question of authorship from start to finish, REVOK has developed systematic yet imperfect tools to carry out his vision and has created a number of unmistakable bodies of work. His bold, balanced, geometry is heightened by the personal and organic sleight of the human hand. Although performing with intention, REVOK never quite knows what the end result will be — this spontaneity and unpredictability a crucial element of his practice.

Introducing a meditatively raw design, the edition is a continuation of REVOK’s distinguished Spirograph series. Making this edition particularly special, the prints are complete with respective marks and splashes of color, making each one distinctly unique from the next. In order to create his Spirograph compositions, REVOK has crafted a large-scale, machine-like spirograph template out of plywood. The stator (outside ring) is fastened to the wall, while the rotor (a smaller gear that holds the can of paint) engages within the perimeter as it moves. The work attempts to harness imperfections and chaos within this predetermined framework, and the number of compositions made possible by combining gears of different sizes and shapes is endless. Here, REVOK has made a brilliant modification to a classic drawing tool, though it is evident through video footage of his process that it is not a methodology for the weak — substantial muscle is required to sustain the physicality needed to complete the work.
